The University of Pennsylvania’s eighth annual Penn Local Business Exchange brought together a diverse and dynamic group of stakeholders committed to strengthening Philadelphia’s business community and advancing regional economic growth.
Under the theme “Fueling Business Growth Locally,” this year’s Exchange brought together a dynamic mix of local entrepreneurs with bold ideas, seasoned Penn suppliers and vendors, influential city leaders committed to regional development, and Penn buyers eager to forge new partnerships. The Exchange served as a platform to build relationships, showcase resources available to local businesses, and highlight Penn’s ongoing commitment to buying local—a cornerstone of the University’s economic inclusion efforts. Each year, Penn spends more than $700 million with regional enterprises, including more than $450 million with Philadelphia-based businesses and over $180 million with those located in West Philadelphia.
A highlight of the event was a forum featuring Philadelphia-based leaders in business, policy, and community development, who shared insights on how collaboration and innovation can accelerate local economic progress. Speakers included:

Jeff Hornstein, Executive Director, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia
Della Clark, President, The Enterprise Center and Partner, Innovate Capital Growth Fund
Michael Newmuis, Director, Philadelphia 2026
Michele Leff, Principal and Founder, 12th Street Catering
Following a lively Q&A session with the panelists, the event recognized outstanding contributions to local engagement with the presentation of the fifth annual Penn Local Economic Impact Award to S. Shani Saunders and Brighid Dwyer, both representing the Office of Academic Excellence and Engagement (OAEE) in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Saunders and Dwyer were recognized for their development of the innovative “Gems of Philadelphia” initiative—a foundational program that features strategic Lunch & Learn sessions introducing Penn staff to local suppliers. Through intentional programming, Gems of Philadelphia showcases businesses throughout the region and deepens the University’s connection to the local economy.

Following the awards, it was announced that one lucky attendee would be walking away with a pair of Eagles tickets following the show. This exciting news carried attendees to the expo, where 51 exhibitors showcased their products and services. The lively networking environment allowed entrepreneurs and buyers to explore new opportunities, exchange ideas, and celebrate the growth of Philadelphia’s local supplier network.
By convening leaders from across sectors, the Penn Local Business Exchange continues to be a powerful catalyst for connection, collaboration, and community impact—fueling business growth locally and strengthening the economic fabric of Philadelphia.
